The goal: making the worlds of content of a shared society accessible to as broad an audience as possible and providing tools for navigating diversity.
In recent years, a phenomenon of social and political polarization has expanded worldwide. Polarization creates distance between different groups and harms the ability to function in shared spaces. This phenomenon affects many countries and is especially prominent in multicultural societies. In Israel, a society composed of groups with different backgrounds, identities, and needs, this polarization finds daily expression in the public sphere, in organizations, workplaces, and communities.
In this reality, there is a growing need to equip students with the skills required to engage with diversity. Such skills are required in every field of study and career. Business and public organizations today operate in a multicultural and diverse environment; policy planning requires understanding of diverse populations, and technological innovation develops most effectively when adapted to a variety of users. The ability to understand different audiences, manage differences, and manage disagreements has become a basic component of the professional world.
Our goal is to provide every student, in every field of study, with tools to understand and navigate work within a diverse reality: To learn how identities, worldviews, and different social backgrounds influence interactions, working relationships, and decision-making processes; to develop sensitivity to different perspectives; to identify barriers in working with diverse populations; and to apply their disciplinary knowledge within a complex social environment.

A cluster of courses is being developed, to be offered to interested departments, focusing on understanding processes of diversity and polarization in Israeli society, and on developing practical tools for managing diversity and fostering dialogic capacities in a complex reality. The courses integrate, as noted, theoretical and applied perspectives from the social sciences, education, and management, encouraging capacities for analysis and transformation of interpersonal and social conflicts through experiential and interdisciplinary learning. The goal of the cluster is to train a young generation for critical thinking, action, and the building of a shared, just, resilient, and socially cohesive society.
To expose the majority of the student community to these contents. Subsequently, we will aspire to develop similar programs within formal education frameworks, in collaboration with “University of Haifa for Youth.”
